Song of The Mermaid

The mermaid sings in her lonely cave

With a white lily her sailor gave.

She keeps the lily alive for him,

He comes to her in every dream.

She waits for him by sunset,

She longs to hear the approaching trumpet.

The days pass in waiting forever

As she had not known men ever.

And though she would wait for long

And weave her love in many a song

The words echoing in her weeping heart,

She hid her tears with amiable art.

Mermen followed her on all her ways,

Her maids missed her for endless days,

Yet she would not look at one.

Her heart was gone, fit for none.

And so the mermaid sings in her lonely cave

With a white lily her sailor gave.

She keeps the lily alive for him,

He comes to her in every dream.
